ABOUT

Bev Moon

Bev Moon New Zealand/Chinese (Seyip, Cantonese, Taishanese)

My great-grandfathers arrived in New Zealand from China in the 1880s in search of gold and new opportunities. Due to New Zealand’s ‘poll tax’ immigration policy of the time, they spent decades separated from their wives back home. My mother and grandmother were just two of 500 Chinese women and children eventually granted temporary refuge by the New Zealand government in 1940 to escape the Japanese invasion in World War II.

Through my artwork I seek to communicate the stories of my ancestors, convey their courage and resilience, and to comment on my experiences growing up with social, cultural and material expectations.

My works are held in public and private collections throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas, including the Auckland War Memorial Museum and the Scott Lawrie collection in Edinburgh, Scotland. A selection of my work is available through Bergman Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand.

My exhibition Fortune is currently touring New Zealand.
